The pheasant goes by many names, but “delicious” is our favorite moniker for the South Dakota state bird. Add in prairie chickens, quail and dove, and the skies are awash with finger food!
With fall here, it’s time to get out the shotguns, put on our hiking boots and hit the fields for some upland hunting. Fortunately, we’ve got the the upland gear for all your wingshooting needs.
Upland is always a tough hunt to gear up for. Sometimes it’s chilly, but gets warm as the day goes on. You need protection from the burrs and bramble, but you still want water resistance. You need insulation, but also strategic venting.
It’s a challenge, but it’s a nut we cracked with the Huron Upland Pants and Jacket.

For the northern hunters, another piece of kit to look at is the Ovis Merino wool base layers. Upland is a lot of walking, and things can warm up quickly. The beauty of Merino is its ability to balance warmth and moisture-wicking.
Leggings, a full-zip sweater or the fan-favorite ¼ zip allow you to pick the Merino base layers that suit your day in the field the best. For us, the ¼ zip is the bomb as it allows us to stay warm in the morning, but dry all day. Then, when it’s time to hit the local establishments and plan for the next day of hunting, we can lose the blaze and still be perfectly comfortable.
In all honesty, there are few experiences that can compete with a beautiful walk through a stubble field on a cool, fall morning, with our best friend sniffing up and pointing out birds.
Don’t ruin this beautiful day with subpar gear. Be smart, get the right kit, and the only worry you have left is what excuses to use for your rusty shotgun skills.
